Textbook Exercise

1.     Fill in the blank with the correct option.

a.     Herbs  have tender and flexible stems that grow very close to the ground. (Shrubs/Herbs)

b.     The part of the plant which grows below the ground is called the root system. (shoot/ root)

c.      The root absorbs water and minerals from the soil. (root/ stem)

d. Fibrous roots are seen in wheat. (Fibrous roots/ Taproots)

d.     Green plants take in carbon dioxide from the air and give out in the process of making food. (oxygen/ carbon dioxide)

e.     A flower changes into a fruit. (flower/leaf)

2.     Name the following.

a.     An example of a climber.

Ans: Grape vine

b.     The stem of a plant which is eaten as food.

Ans: Potato

c.      The part of the plant that makes food.

Ans: Leaf

3.                 Match the columns:

        Column  A

       Column  B

a.

Ginger

a.

 Stem

b.

Grass

b.

Fibrous root

 Plant product

d.

Bean

d.

Taproot

4.                Answer the following questions in 3 to 5 sentences.

a.     How is a fruit formed?

Ans: Fruits are formed from flower, when plant grows its full size.

b.     List the different parts of the shoot system.

Ans: Stem, flowers, leaves, buds and fruits these are the parts of the   shoot     system.

c.      What is photosynthesis?

Ans: Photosynthesis is the process in which plant leaves uses sunlight,   water and carbon dioxide to prepare food.

Workbook Exercise:

1.    Match the following:

Type of plant           Characteristic

a) Trees                  1) Thick and strong trunks

 b) Climbers            2) Tender and weak stems

      c) Shrubs               3) Thin and woody stems

d) Herbs                4) Tender and flexible stems

(a)   ___4___, (b) __1__, (c) __2___, (d) __3__ 2.

2.    State whether the following statements are true or false.

a)   The shoot system grows above the ground.

     True

b)   All roots store food within them.

False

c)   The leaf blade is also called lamina.

True

d)   Plants can prepare their own food.

 True

3.  Fill in the blanks.

a)   The green colour of the leaves is due to chlorophyll.

b)   The pores on a leaf blade through which air enters a plant are known as stomata.

c)   A banana leaf is used to serve food.

d)   The thick and strong stem of a fully grown tree is called a trunk.

4.  Give reason for the following:

a)   Leaves are green in colour.

Because of the presence of chlorophyll.

b)   Climbers grow along nearby trees, fences or buildings.

Climbers have tender and weak stems and cannot stand on their own. So they need support to grow.

5.    Answer in one sentence.

a)   What is photosynthesis?

The leaves use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide with the help of chlorophyll to prepare food. This process is called photosynthesis.

b)   What are taproots?

A thick main root with small roots growing from its sides is called a taproot.

c)   What does a seed need to grow into a new plant?

A seed needs enough water, air and warmth to grow into a new plant.

d)   Which gases are involved in the process of photosynthesis?

Carbon dioxide, oxygen

6.  Answer in brief:

a)   Write two functions of a fruit.

·        The fruit protects the seed inside it.

·        Seeds from the fruit give rise to new plants

b)   State any one difference between a tap root and a fibrous root.

Tap Root

Fibrous Root

A    thick     main     root     with     small     roots

Thin roots which start growing from the

growing from its sides

base of the stem in a bunch.

7.The picture given below shows a process that takes place in all plants.

a)      Name the process shown in the picture.

Photosynthesis

b)   In which part of the plant does this process generally take place?

Leaves

8. Draw a leaf and label its parts.

9.    What will you observe when a plant is not kept in sunlight but is provided with enough water and air?

The leaf makes food for the plant only in the presence of sunlight. So with        no sunlight the plant will not be able to make food even though it is provided   with enough water and air.

10.Find four words related to plants in the given puzzle

1.
TAPROOT

2.      LAMINA

3.      SEED

4.      FRUIT

11.  Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)

What will happen if a flower does not change into a fruit?

If a flower does not change into a fruit, there will be no seeds. If no seeds it means there will be no new plants.
